Last-minute shopping and holiday cheer on Lake Street

Some of the most colorful shopping in Minnesota is along Lake Street, and if you’re looking for some last-minute gifts, or just a place to take in the festive atmosphere, start at the Mercado Central, located on the southwest corner of Lake and Bloomington in Minneapolis.

Inside you’ll find 35 businesses, including restaurants, handicrafts, fresh meat and produce, and the cozy feeling of a Latin American market. Stop by and see Ayde Vásquez (in the photo above) at Jhoaleymat, where she helps design parties and events along with her colorful wares.

Wander around the market and take in the atmosphere before heading next door to La Carreta (above, owner Alma Domínguez, pictured on the right, next to LEDC Director of Advancement Caitlin Skinner) for a delicious cocktail or famous ceviche before crossing the street to La Mexicana Supermercado (below, Juan Luis Lala points toware the bakery while his father, Mauro Madrigal, in the gray hat, looks on) for outstanding baked goods and all the supplies to make give your holiday celebrations a taste of home.

From there, head east and window shop before stepping into Midtown Global Market. This international bazaar has flavors, colors and sounds from all around the world.

Stop by and say hello to Mustafa (pictured above) at Dar Medina for authentic Moroccan gifts, and then wander around before having churros and hot chocolate at Manny’s Tortas.

In just a few blocks, you’ll feel like you’ve seen the world, all while supporting small businesses along Minnesota’s most iconic street.
